The North Kansas City Police Headquarters project is comprised of a new addition adjacent to the City's existing City Hall and Police Department complex as well as renovation of the existing police department and municipal court spaces. Occupied in the late 1970's, the original facility was beyond operational capacity the day the police department moved in.

In accordance with the requirements of the City, the expanded area of the facility was designed to compliment the original structure's architectural character. The interior of the new addition was also designed to compliment the existing facility interior so that a cohesive interior environment would be realized.

Because of a small and challenging site, the construction of the addition was only possible after the demolition of the police department's existing parking garages. In order to provide the police department with equivalent parking accommodations for their fleet vehicles, an underground parking garage was included in the basement of the expansion area.

Due to the requirements for continuous police department occupancy on-site, special consideration for project sequencing and phasing was necessary to ensure that police department operations could continue throughout the construction phase.

The new facility includes secure public contact points for Police Records, Communications, Municipal Court and Police Administration. A new facility-wide security system was designed to allow both new and renovated areas of the municipal complex to benefit from a modern electronic access control and surveillance camera system. A multipurpose Community Room was designed adjacent to the main public lobby to serve not only for community functions but to address the needs for not only an Emergency Operations Center but also space for major case task force operations and police training activities.
